Arriving / Getting here

    Location

    Howe Hall is located on the west side of the Iowa State University campus.

    Airport Information

    If you are planing on flying into the area, you need to fly into the Des Moines International Airport (DSM). Ames is about 40 miles north of the airport. A list of the carriers with service to Des Moines can be found at the Des Moines airport's homepage.

    Directions

      Des Moines to Ames (see map 1)
      1. From the Des Moines Airport, proceed South on Fleur Drive to Army Post Road. Turn right (West).
      2. Follow Army Post Road until you reach Interstate 35 North. Turn right (North) onto Interstate 35. Continue on Interstate 35 North for approximately 40 miles.
      From I-35 to Iowa State University (see map 2)
      1. Via 13th Street
        From Interstate 35 North, take the Ames / 13th Street exit.
        Continue on 13th Street until you reach Stange Road. Turn left (South) on Stange.
        Follow Stange Road south until you reach the Iowa State University Campus.
      2. Via Highway 30:
        From Interstate 35 North, take the Ames / Highway 30 West exit.
        Proceed on Highway 30 West until you reach the ISU / Elwood Drive exit. Exit on University/Elwood Drive, go right (North) on University/Elwood.
        Follow University/Elwood Drive North until you reach the Iowa State University campus.

    Parking

    Parking is available at The Memorial Union ramp located in central campus (map). There is a fee for parking in the ramp, check here for current information: Memorial Union Parking Ramp.

Getting around Ames

  • Ames has two taxis (three on a busy night). If you want one, make sure to book in advance: (515) 232-1343.
  • Ames has an extensive public bus service, Cyride. The cost is a $1 flat rate, and you will need exact change. The bus drivers are very friendly and are normally happy to help with directions.

Internet access

  • There is free wireless access many places in Ames (except, perhaps, your hotel). Campus is completely covered, and most cafes and eating places have free wireless too.
