Synopsis
The department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has set a goal to provide state-of-the-art space and facilities to aid student-oriented cooperative learning. The new Active Learning Complex will combine space for cooperative learning with space for teaching assistants, creating an evironment where students can enhance their learning through communication and teamwork.
Studies have shown that students have a higher retention rate when they work in teams. They can also become better prepared for today's work environment by exposure to cooperative learning. Iowa State University is a leader in cooperative learning, and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is at the forefront of this effort due to faculty development of the program. By moving from teacher-oriented instruction to student-oriented instruction, students are experiencing a cooperative learning evironment in a majority of the core classes.
